What did you think about while you read the womens stories?
As i read about Judith and Affra i realized that they were very poor. They didnt have any money and they were lucky if they got anything to eat in one day. I started to think about how they would feel. I couldnt really feel exactly what they probably felt because i have never been in that situation, but if i was imagining it i may feel hopeless and abandoned. I would be worried all the time because i dont know if im going to be able to eat anything ever again. But hopefully that will never happen to me.

You are right about Judith and Affra and their unfortunate quality of living. Both women suffered due to their poverty and hunger but kept themselves together throughout it all, somehow. It is very sad and hard to think about how they must have felt and lived. I know I would feel worried everyday as well and somewhat defeated in such a state.
ReplyDeleteBut despite their situation and poor life, they were able to leave an influence, did you see what they left? I thought it was cool that both women were able to make an impact on a family in the South Carolinian society in the long run and show the society the importance of charity.
yeah i did too with all the terrible things that had gone on in their lives. The thing that i thought was cool was they didn't want people to feel bad for them because they knew that they could do it
ReplyDeleteHow did the womens stories help you understand SC history?
ReplyDeleteWhat helped me was knowing that hannah was the first woman biologist. She knew so many things about so many different of plants and animals. And it was in such an early time when most people didn't know much about that kind of stuff. Henrietta helped me understand because TWO of her paintings are hanging in the governors manision! The governors mansion was historical soooooo....... yeah! They are worth so much now and back then they were worth so little. Thats how they helped me understand what they have to do with SC history!
I think Hannah is such a great leader and model for women in South Carolina and in the nation at the time, especially since womens' roles in society and their community aren't what they are today. Do you think she was one of few in her community to be a woman biologist? Do you think she was commended or looked down upon for that? She was obviously in contact with others like her since her excerpt is a letter written to someone describing the objects included. I thought it was interesting to see her little part about sending birds!!?? what do you think about that?
ReplyDeleteWow, I didnt know that about Henrietta! I have never been to the Governors Mansion, I bet i would LOVEEEEE it. Did you get to see her paintings when you went there? She obviously made a name for herself they're hanging in there!
I enjoyed Sophia's story about her religious leadership and how she embarked on trips across the nation sharing her beliefs, do you think that was bold?
I thougth that hannah was one of ew in her community to be that but i also dont think that she was the only one. I'm not sure if she was looked down upon or not i think that it was cool that she was the first woman biologist and stuff but i dont know if people back in the day thougth so too. Yeah i thought it was interesting too and at first i thought that she was going to send the birds dead but i guess she found a way around that. Yes i thought it was pretty bold!
ReplyDeleteahh sorry i missed this post! my bad! i think that she is a pretty cool woman! you did a great job thinking through that about her and putting yourelf into her position and the fdifferent values in the different eras in history! thats so crazy she had the birds still. how weird but neat for the field!
